sudoku_excl uses algorithms of exclusion for the solution, creation and reduction of Sudokus. The program package "sudoku_excl" solves Sudokus by a twofold complemetary algorithm of exclusion: "Solve (excl. pr.)". If this deterministic procedure does not entirely solve the Sudoku, an additional algorithm of trial and error can be run: "Solve (excl. pr. & trial)". The trials consist in one open number of the partially solved Sudoku being guessed and subsequent checking by means of exclusion principles, if the Sudoku can be solved. If it fails, the next possible guess is performed and so on.Furthermore a solving algorithm - programmed by G.M. Boynton, 6/3/05 - has been added: "Solve (excl. pr. & rec.)". By an intelligently designed recursive procedure of systematic trial and error this algorithm finds ALL solutions to ALL Sudoku initial conditions. Prior to this algorithm the algorithm of exclusion is performed, in order to increase the speed of solving procedure and to check for errors in the initial settings.Furthermore uniquely solvable Sudoku initial conditions can be created. For this purpose a random algorithm is used in combination with the above mentioned solving procedures. Either Sudoku enigmas of low difficulty can be obtained, solvable by the deterministic algorithm of exclusion: "Create (solvable by excl. pr.)", or enigmas of high difficulty are created, solvable by the algorithm of trial and error, but not solvable solely by the algorithm of exclusion: "Create (solvable by trial)". The procedure of creation of Sudokus with high difficulty takes some minutes.The number of initial conditions can be reduced, the reduction algorithm being guided either by the demand that the Sudoku will be solvable by the algorithm of exclusion: "Reduce (solvable by excl. pr.)" or by the demand that the Sudoku will be solvable by sudoku_func.m and that it will be uniquely solvable: "Reduce (solvable by trial)".
